Self-Care For The Zodiac Signs

Although often dismissed as frivolous and unfounded by many, astrology can be a source of self-knowledge. But what is astrology? According to the most famous astrologer in the world, Susan Miller, “Astrology is the study of the correlation between the astronomical positions of the planets and events on earth. Astrologers believe that the positions of the Sun, Moon, and planets at the time of a person’s birth have a direct influence on that person’s character.” Commonly held to be fortune telling, it is, in fact, a way to get to know yourself and others better. Astrology can help guide us and better understand our feelings, behaviours and tendencies. It can be one tool among so many to help us understand who and how we are, the basis of self-love. We talked to Ines Heals, a modern astrologer, and asked her to share some tips on how to enrich your self-care regimen based on the unique traits of your sun sign.

Aries energy is feisty, pioneering, and reflects the joy of new beginnings. You are super active and love to be busy with projects that allow you to tap into your unique skills and nurture your individuality. Physical exercise is often the best form of meditation for the Aries person, who finds a way to access an inner reservoir of stillness through movement. Running can be the best way to practice contemplation, and to let off some much-needed steam! One thing to practice as an Aries person is patience; this will help you tune into a truer sense of timing in your life and to slow down when a more relaxed pace is needed. Aries rules the head in medical astrology, so maintaining clear, purposeful and positive thoughts is a must. Work with the herbs Skullcap or Gotu Kola to help nurture the mind and relax the cognitive functions. Any flowery scents, such as lavender or rose, will also be helpful in calming irritability and nourish your receptive, Yin side.

Taurus energy is naturally sensual, lush with desire and fond of fine foods, wines and all things beautiful. Freshly laundered sheets, flowers in the home, and beauty rituals such as facials and long baths with essential oils and salts will always provide a sense of comfort and nurture the self-worth of the Taurus person! You have expensive tastes and enjoy the experience of buying products that reflect what you truly value in life. Take joy in selecting the finest items and spoiling yourself once in a while with something luxurious. As a Fixed Earth sign, you would do well to also spend time in nature. Connect to the beauty of life through your favorite tree, landscape or flower. Buying fresh flowers for the home will also help to cleanse the air and remove negative energies. In medical astrology, Taurus rules the throat, so singing and music can often bring a fair amount of relaxation and enjoyment. Make sure to protect your sensitive neck area by boosting your immunity with oregano oil or Echinacea, especially around the changing of seasons.

As the first Air sign of the zodiac, Gemini is the energy of communication and learning. There is a strength of curiosity and longing for stimulation that exists more palpably in the Gemini individual than in any other of the zodiac signs. Your natural fascination with stories, poetry and the power of words means expressing yourself through writing and speaking will always bring you home to your strengths. But all that mental work can easily leave you up in the air, sometimes getting in the way of doing things here on Earth! You tend to expend your energy in too many places at once, which contributes to feelings of distraction, exhaustion, and disconnection. Work on grounding yourself through gardening, spending more time alone, and developing your craft. A quiet night in does much to restore your inner exuberance and help you to refocus. Tend to your active mind through mindfulness meditation and deep breathing exercises. In medical astrology, Gemini rules the lungs, so be good to this part of your body by not smoking and using herbs like Licorice to get rid of any excess congestion.

You need to feel secure and safe in order to fully shine your light out onto the world, Cancer. For you, it’s important to have a comfortable place called home to stay rooted and to be nurtured. Long baths, a full night’s rest, and a nourishing home cooked meal are definitely luxuries worth your while. As the first Water sign of the zodiac, you need time to process your emotions and practice awareness of your reactions when confronted with difficult emotional situations. Understanding the nature of the lunar cycle will help you, a Moon-ruled sign, tune into your own natural rhythms throughout the month. As the Moon moves from New Moon to Full Moon it is naturally a time of confidence, strength, activity, and movement. At the Full Moon especially, we meet with the culmination of whatever themes are at work in our lives. As the Moon wanes and especially during the Dark Moon (generally lasting 3 days before the New Moon), it is normal to have less energy and to be more internal. It’s okay to need time to recharge so don’t force yourself to be out and active when you know what you need is to stay cozy at home! In medical astrology Cancer rules the stomach, so make sure you are eating the right foods that are pure and that make you feel good. Peppermint tea can be a helpful digestive when needed, as can using cumin, turmeric, and coriander as spices with your meals.

The Leo energy blesses individuals with the gift of being open and unashamed about self-expression. Feel free to apply this further by going big with your self-care rituals! Indulge in a romantic day at the spa with your partner and really let yourself bask and connect to your inner sense of royalty. You are the kings and queens of the zodiac and you deserve to feel good! Don’t allow others to make you feel shy about radiating your inner strength, as following your confidence is what makes you learn and grow. In medical astrology, Leo rules the heart, so you would do well to keep your heart space loving and generous, as well as healthy by avoiding red meats and getting the right amount of exercise. Swimming can be a lovely way for you to stay fit and to nurture your heart. Garlic is also extremely beneficial for the heart, as are herbal teas made from Sea Buckthorn and Hawthorne berries.

Your mind-body connection is naturally strong, so healthy living and peaceful associations are a likely priority in your life already, Virgo. Think of your body as the keeper of truth. When situations are bad for you, you will know through the messages your health is sending you. Refine your intuition regarding these messages through you amazing mental faculties: look to ancient forms of holistic healing like Chinese medicine and Ayurveda for a more illuminated understanding of your body. Knowledge will be powerful for you in creating a deeper and more positive connection to your body and health. Although you are very much about being practical and methodical in all of your activities, it will be important for you to learn how to relax in life. Forms of assisted healing like Reiki, which help you to dive into a deep state of inner peace and relaxation, are essential to providing your busy self a sense of calmness. In medical astrology, Virgo rules the small intestine. This is the area of the body that processes the foods we intake and organizes them. If you find your digestion is finicky, reflect on how you are digesting your life experiences. Leave some room for spontaneity and allow yourself to go with the flow more often, your body will thank you. When you need a bit of help, a wonderful Ayurvedic herb called Triphala can provide a daily cleansing for your digestive system while helping your nutrient absorption. Just make sure to take it in capsules, as it’s not the most pleasant of tastes!

The Libran strength is in compromise, negotiation and maintaining the peace. This means your relationships are usually stable, although it can sometimes take a fair amount of your efforts to keep them at this balanced state. We all know how much you value your loved ones, but one way for you to practice self-care is by focusing more on you! Spend a day at your favourite gallery or feed your love for new knowledge with an audiobook or podcast. Learn to appreciate your time alone and to nourish your passions and purpose. Explore how it feels to express your most authentic self and enjoy developing your unique individuality! In medical astrology, Libra rules the kidneys and the water balance in the body, so it’s important for you to stay hydrated and to avoid eating too much salt. If you tend towards water retention, try herbs like Burdock, Dandelion, and Marshmallow. These will also help to remove any toxins from your body and to keep your skin looking its finest.

There is one thing that unites all Scorpios in their experience of reality and that is intensity! As a Fixed Water sign, there is a lot going on under the surface for you and deep emotional processes are the norm. Maintaining a high degree of self-awareness is crucial to managing this energy and to keep you emotionally sound. Use ancient systems of self-knowledge and guidance such as astrology and tarot to enrich your relationship with yourself. Becoming better acquainted with the archetypal worlds that influence your reactions and behaviours will help you to make better decisions and bring your incredible drive into greater focus. In medical astrology, Scorpio rules the generative organs, another nod to the creative potential of this sign energy. Practice self-care by being selective about whom you choose to engage with intimately and by developing your creative talents. If you end up burning yourself out or you get the feeling of low vitality or low energy, a rejuvenating Ayurvedic herb called Ashwagandha feeds the deepest tissues of the body to support your vital energy and libido. It also helps to stabilize the nervous system and nourishes bone tissue. Bottoms up!

Sagittarius is considered a lucky sign in both Vedic (Indian) and Western forms of Astrology. This is because of Jupiter’s rulership over this energy, which bestows Sagittarians with optimism, faith and the desire to expand and grow through all circumstances. This means you, Sagittarius, is a creature of big dreams, covering lots of territory in one day and galloping onwards despite setbacks. When Sagittarian William Blake said “the road of excess leads to the palace of wisdom,” he was definitely talking about this quality in himself! Practice self-care by slowing down and striving for balance in all your activities. I know your enthusiasm for life makes it hard to imagine that going headstrong into a million directions won’t take its toll on you, but it does! Make sure you are eating foods that are healthy and nourishing for your body, even though it might be easy for you to indulge in what isn’t. Be mindful of extremes and remember that what goes up must come down! Jupiter rules the liver in medical astrology, so keeping your liver healthy with cleansing herbs such as Milk Thistle and Burdock root is a worthwhile effort.

Few zodiac signs compare to your raw drive for success, Capricorn. You are naturally ambitious and want to be at the top of your game. This push that your ruler, Saturn, applies on you to achieve mastery can be a little intense at times and can even create a strong inner critic that actually limits you from reaching your potential through its harsh expectations of perfection. For you, it’s important to find time to really relax every day and trust in the guidance of the universe to help you in your efforts towards greatness. Faith is a self-care practice you should begin nurturing as soon as possible. Working with affirmations can provide you with a structured approach to building your faith muscle, and will also help you to be gentler with yourself and others through rewriting your inner script. Try saying “I am positively expecting great results, no matter what I see in front of me,” every day upon waking and before going to sleep. “I know the universe is rearranging itself for my greatest good, Amen!” In medical astrology, Capricorn rules the bones and teeth, so keeping your bones strong with yoga as well as being mindful of your posture are necessary self-care practices for you. Release the tension in your shoulders with soothing bodywork, especially one that combines therapeutic massage with Reiki. Your inner child will thank you for your kindness.

Aquarius, your mind is an electric web of ideas, visions, and utopian ideals. You are so captivated by understanding the world around you that you likely question and come to your own conclusions about everything that interests you. Few signs can match your ability to think and to write, but all that mental activity can leave your nervous system depleted, which in turn affects your body. Many of your chronic disease patterns are psychosomatic in nature, so tending to the health of your mental and emotional life is necessary if you want to be truly well. Reiki is an ideal form of self-care for you, as it allows for deep relaxation and the release of stored emotions that may otherwise be difficult for you to process. One exhausting practice you can let go of right away is being overly concerned with the way other people see you. Your intense self-awareness can easily spill over into self-consciousness, which gets in the way of your true self-expression. As the water-bearer of the zodiac, you are meant to pour forth your vision to enlighten and enrich humanity. Trust that your passion is your purpose and carry it forward without reservation. As the opposing sign of Leo, which rules the heart, it is important for you to develop a more open heart-space. Practice tolerance, unconditional love, and compassion by doing heart-centering meditations with stones such as Rhodochrosite, Rose Quartz and Unakite. As you often suffer from poor circulation, drinking fresh ginger tea daily can provide an easy and tasty solution to your cold extremities.

Yours is the gift of compassion and magic, Pisces. As the final sign of the zodiac, you have a bit of all the other signs in you and this allows you a deep well of compassion for the struggles of others. While it is in your generous nature to freely give of yourself to others, it is important for you to set the appropriate boundaries for yourself. Your tendency to sacrifice your needs for the needs of others can bring about a loss of self and can get you into destructive relationships that abuse your good nature. Practice self-care by letting go of the people in your life that come to you only when they are in crisis, or who don’t seem to take as much interest in you as you do in them. Nurture your amazing creative talents by painting, dancing and making music. You’re highly imaginative mind can conjure magical realities that other people long to dive into. In medical astrology, Pisces rules the feet and the lymphatic system. Reflexology can be a wonderful healer for you, as well as practices such as dry brushing in the morning before your shower. This will help to detoxify your body and leave you with more energy to take on the world. Remember that taking the time you need to decompress from it all is more than okay. Your highly sensitive nature means a day in the life of a Pisces can be overwhelming compared to the way that the other signs are processing reality, making your daily retreat more than warranted!
